Nikolai's Dream

You find yourself suspended over a perspective the eye cannot grasp; events seem to flow past you and around you, but they do not touch you in any way. Somewhere in the murk that surrounds your perspective, you can almost make out the twinkles of light on what could only be the largest spiderweb in the multiverse, but that is not where your attention is drawn.

Somehow, the causeway you were suspended in has vanished, and you stand in a room with four exits. On the floor before each of them, a single tarot card lies.

As you bend to examine the Ace of Swords, can see that some trick of perspective permits you to see a great rift in the Oearth near the back of the card.

When when examining the Devil, you can see the card flicker, slightly. At one moment, the couple who stand before him are free and the Devil is bound, the next, the Devil is free and the couple bound.

The Judgement card is chillingly cold to the touch; while the angel with the trumpet looks kindly, sometimes his skin is decidedly blue in color, and at such times you can see that his hands drip with blood.

The final card, that of the Magician, eludes your grasp. You can see it, lying there, but no grasp will let you reach it. Some inner sight shows the lines of force link this card with all the others, and even with yourself...

Rising to study the room more carefully, you do finally notice another exit; a tiny mousehole, that seems to be shrinking as you watch it. Movement catches your eye, and a disembodied hand covers one of the cards, and you notice that the hole stops shrinking and grows larger; inspired, you place your hand over another card and it grows larger still....
